Engagement rate calculator for social media

Works for Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and any other platform that shows likes, comments, shares and saves. Type the numbers for one post or several, choose followers, reach or impressions, and read the rate with the formula behind it.

Applies to both modes.

How to use

  1. 01

    Enter one post

In Single post, type the interactions and the denominator. The rate updates as you type and the formula is printed under it.
  2. 02

    Or enter several posts

In Several posts, add one row per post. You get both the mean of per-post rates and the pooled rate (all interactions over all denominators), each with a note on when to use it.
  3. 03

    Adjust the formula

Open Formula options under the results to choose which interactions count and the denominator: followers, reach or impressions. By default the tool counts likes, comments, shares and saves over followers.
  4. 04

    Compare like with like

Keep the same interactions and the same denominator when you compare posts, accounts or periods; a rate by reach and a rate by followers are different numbers.

Engagement rate formula

Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares + saves) / followers x 100%. Take a post with 120 likes, 14 comments, 6 shares and 10 saves: that is 150 interactions. On an account with 5,000 followers the rate is 150 / 5,000 x 100% = 3.00%. If the same post reached 2,400 people, the rate by reach is 150 / 2,400 x 100% = 6.25%. Both numbers are correct; they answer different questions, so say which denominator you used whenever you share a rate.

How to calculate engagement rate for several posts

There are two common ways, and they can give very different results. Say post A had 50 interactions from a reach of 500 (10%) and post B had 200 interactions from a reach of 10,000 (2%). The average of the two rates is 6%. The pooled rate adds everything up first: 250 / 10,500 x 100% = 2.38%. The average tells you how a typical post did, while the pooled rate is closer to how the account did over the period, because large posts count for more.

What counts as a good engagement rate

Published benchmarks rarely agree, partly because they use different formulas: some divide by followers and others by reach or impressions, and not all of them count shares and saves. A fairer yardstick is your own history. Calculate the rate the same way for your last 10 to 20 posts and compare each new post with that range.

Limitations

  • The tool does not fetch any data; it computes from the numbers you type, and nothing leaves your browser.
  • No benchmark or grade is shown. What counts as a good rate depends on the network, the format and the account size.
  • Platforms define reach and impressions differently; the result is only as comparable as the inputs.
  • Rates above 100% are shown as they are: one person can like, comment, share and save the same post, comments can repeat, and reach can exceed followers.

FAQ

What is the engagement rate formula?

Engagement rate = interactions / denominator x 100%. Interactions are usually likes plus comments, often plus shares and saves. The denominator is followers, reach or impressions. The tool prints the exact formula for the options you picked.

Should I divide by followers, reach or impressions?

Followers makes rates comparable across accounts when you only know audience size. Reach shows how the people who actually saw the post responded. Impressions counts every view, so repeated views lower the rate. Pick one and keep it.

Why are the two results for several posts different?

The mean of per-post rates gives every post the same weight, so a small post with a high rate pulls the mean up. The pooled rate divides all interactions by all denominators, so posts with a larger audience weigh more. Use the mean to describe a typical post and the pooled rate for an account over a period.

Can an engagement rate be above 100%?

Yes. One person can like, comment, share and save the same post, so interactions can outnumber people; comments can repeat; and a post can reach more people than the account has followers. The tool does not cap the result and explains it when it happens.

What happens when the denominator is zero?

The tool asks for a denominator above zero instead of showing infinity. In the multi-post mode such posts are skipped and counted as skipped under the results.
