Strikethrough text generator

Type or paste text and copy it with a line through every character. The stroke is a mark added after each character, so it works on ą, é, ñ and emoji as well as on A to Z.

These are Unicode symbols, not a font or native formatting. Screen readers may read them letter by letter or skip them, and search does not match them to the plain words. Use them for a short highlight, not for whole posts.

How to use

  1. 01

    Type or paste your text

The strikethrough and underline versions at the top update as you type. The other Unicode styles are listed below them.
  2. 02

    Copy the strikethrough

Press the copy button next to Strikethrough and paste it into the post, caption, bio or comment.
  3. 03

    Check the length

Struck text is about twice as long for most counters. Paste it into the character counter if the post is close to the platform's limit.
  4. 04

    Check it on a phone

Some fonts draw the stroke in pieces or slightly off the letters. Look at the draft on a phone before you publish.

How the strikethrough is made

After each visible character the tool adds U+0336, the combining long stroke overlay. Apps draw that mark across the character in front of it, so the text looks crossed out while the letters underneath stay the original letters. The same approach with U+0332, the combining low line, gives the underline style.

Where crossed-out text works

A typical use is an old price next to a new one, such as a struck $49 before $39. It also works for a visible correction or a joke where the struck word is the point. Keep it to a few words, since a whole crossed-out paragraph is hard to read on a phone.

Limitations

  • Every struck character carries one extra code point, so the text nearly doubles in length on platforms that count code points.
  • Spaces and line breaks get no stroke, which leaves small gaps in the line between words.
  • How the stroke looks depends on the font of the app and device. It can sit too high, too low or break between letters.
  • Screen readers and platform search see the letters followed by marks. Keep names, hashtags and keywords you want found out of struck text.

FAQ

Why does my character count go up so much?

Each struck character is two code points: the letter and the stroke mark. A counter that counts code points sees $49 struck through as 6 characters instead of 3.

Can I strike through emoji and accented letters?

Yes. The mark is added after every visible character, whatever the script. Bold and italic only exist for A to Z, but the stroke works on any letter the font can show.

How do I remove the strikethrough?

Paste the text into the LinkedIn text formatter on this site and use its plain text action. It removes the stroke and underline marks and leaves the letters.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The marks are added in your browser and nothing you type leaves the page.
