Why does the text look bold without a bold button?
Unicode has a Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block with bold, italic, script, fraktur, double-struck, sans-serif and monospace versions of the Latin alphabet, meant for formulas. Platforms that strip formatting still accept these characters because to them they are ordinary letters. The tool replaces each ASCII letter with its counterpart from an explicit table; a few letters such as the italic h or the script B, E, F, H, I, L, M and R live in the older Letterlike Symbols block, which is why a simple code point offset would get them wrong.
