YouTube title and description character counter

YouTube caps titles at 100 characters and descriptions at 5,000 bytes, not characters. Accents and emoji eat bytes faster, so this counter switches unit with the field.

How to use

  1. 01

    Count the title first

Select Video title. The limit is 100 characters and the characters < and > are not allowed anywhere in it.
  2. 02

    Switch to the description

Select Video description. The figure shown is UTF-8 bytes against 5,000; a plain English description uses one byte per character, Polish or French text uses two for accented letters, emoji use four.
  3. 03

Check comments if you reply from a tool

The Comment field applies the 10,000-character cap that bundle.social enforces for YouTube comments.
  4. 04

Copy into YouTube Studio or your scheduler

Copy the field text when it fits. Titles and descriptions are validated against the same numbers when publishing through bundle.social.

Why is the YouTube description limit in bytes?

UTF-8 stores ASCII letters in one byte, most accented Latin letters in two, CJK characters in three and emoji in four. A 5,000-byte limit therefore holds about 5,000 characters of English, somewhat fewer of Polish or French, fewer than 1,700 of Japanese, and 1,250 emoji. The counter computes the byte figure from your text.

Limitations

  • YouTube states the description limit in bytes. For that field the counter uses UTF-8 bytes, the stricter of the two readings. bundle.social validates 5,000 UTF-16 units.
  • YouTube gives the title limit as 100 characters without a unit, so the counter uses code points.
  • Chapters, timestamps and links are plain text here; YouTube's own rules for recognising chapters are not checked.
  • The comment cap of 10,000 could not be read on an official YouTube page on the check date and is marked not verified.

FAQ

What is the YouTube title and description limit?

A YouTube title can be 100 characters and a description 5,000 bytes, and neither may contain < or >. Source: YouTube Data API, Videos resource, read 1 November 2026. Because the description counts bytes, accented letters take 2 and most emoji 4, so it can hit the cap before 5,000 characters. bundle.social validates 100 and 5,000 UTF-16 units.

Why does my 4,900-character description get rejected?

Because YouTube counts bytes, not characters. Accented letters take two bytes and emoji four, so a description can pass 5,000 bytes while still under 5,000 characters. Select the description field here to see the byte count.

Can I use < or > in a title or description?

No. YouTube's API documentation excludes both characters from titles and descriptions.

Does the title limit count emoji as one character?

YouTube says 100 characters without naming a unit. The counter uses code points, so a simple emoji is 1 and a multi-part emoji counts each part.

Is the first comment limited too?

bundle.social accepts up to 10,000 characters for a YouTube comment. YouTube's own cap could not be confirmed on an official page on the check date, so that rule is marked not verified.

Do hashtags in the description count?

Yes, as text. Hashtags above the title are taken from the description, so their bytes count toward 5,000.
