Best Social Media APIs for Developers: Unified Providers vs Native APIs

The best social media API depends on your product. Compare bundle.social, Zernio, Ayrshare, Upload-Post, Buffer and native APIs on features and real prices.

There is no single best social media API. If your product publishes for many clients across several networks, a unified API such as bundle.social, Zernio, Ayrshare or Upload-Post saves the most engineering time. If you need every feature of one or two networks, the native platform APIs win.

We build bundle.social, so this comparison of publishing, engagement features and billing comes from a vendor. Competitor figures come from each vendor's own pricing page or documentation, and bundle.social gets a weak spot like every other entry.

Last checked: November 2026.

Best use and weak spot of each provider

bundle.social

Best for: SaaS products and agencies whose customers connect many accounts. Every paid plan includes unlimited teams and connected accounts, so the bill follows posting volume: Pro is $100 per month for 10,000 posts, Business $400 per month for 100,000. Instagram and Facebook messaging, comment-to-DM automations and signed webhooks are part of the same social media API.

Workflow tools and AI agents use that API too: the n8n, Make and Zapier integrations page shows how each tool connects today, and the social media MCP server lets Claude or Cursor post and schedule.

Weak spot: messaging covers only Instagram and Facebook Messenger for Pages, is enabled per organization on request, and keeps 30 days of message history. There is no Ads API. Analytics need a paid plan, and X operations are billed separately, per use from a prepaid credit balance ($0.015 per post, $0.20 with a link).

The Free plan includes API access, 20 posts a month and 3 teams.

One contract-first API to publish, schedule and measure across 15 platforms.

Zernio

Best for: products that want the widest catalog under one contract. Zernio (formerly Late) bills by usage with no plans, lists publishing, analytics, comments, inbox and webhooks, and adds messaging channels such as WhatsApp and Telegram plus an Ads API.

Weak spot: every connected account is a line item. The first 2 are free, accounts 3 to 10 cost $6 each per month, 11 to 100 cost $3 each and 101 and above cost $1 each. At 100 accounts that is $318 per month, before X fees passed through at X's own rates.

Ayrshare

Best for: agencies and platforms where one customer or brand connects several networks. A profile covers up to 14 networks and bills once, and the Messaging API covers Facebook Messenger, Instagram and X direct messages, with WhatsApp in private beta.

Weak spot: there is no free plan, only a 28-day trial of Launch. Premium costs $149 per month for one profile, Launch $299 for up to 10 profiles, and webhooks start at Launch. Messaging is included with Business plans and costs $49 per month as an add-on to Premium.

Upload-Post

Best for: publishing-heavy workloads on a budget. Paid plans are flat with unlimited uploads, starting at $24 per month ($16 billed yearly) for 5 profiles, and the docs cover comments, Instagram DMs, analytics and webhooks.

Weak spot: the Free plan stops at 10 uploads a month and 2 profiles and excludes TikTok. DMs are documented for Instagram only, so Facebook Messenger workflows need another provider.

Buffer API

Best for: scripts and internal tools that automate your own Buffer queue. Even the Free plan includes 1 API key with 1,000 requests per channel per month, and the API covers post creation, scheduling, ideas, channel metadata and post metrics.

Weak spot: Buffer describes access as personal-key only, which covers your own accounts and leaves out products where customers connect theirs. Comments, DMs and webhooks do not appear in its developer docs. Publer has an API too, but only on its Business and Enterprise plans.

Native platform APIs

Best for: one or two networks where you need every feature the platform exposes as soon as it ships.

Weak spot: you own each review process, token flow, rate limit and breaking change, separately for every network.

A native API is a plug cut for one socket, so every additional network needs its own integration.

Native APIs: review, audits and per-request billing

For Meta, an app that publishes to Instagram accounts you do not own or manage needs Advanced Access to the publishing permission, which requires App Review and Business Verification. Apps limited to your own business can use Standard Access without review. Our notes on getting through Meta App Review cover the submission itself, and the guide to Instagram API rate limits covers the request limits you manage once the app is live.

TikTok restricts everything posted through the Content Posting API to private viewing until your API client passes its audit. Unaudited clients can let at most 5 users post in a 24-hour window, and those accounts must be private when they post. If you are budgeting a direct build, see what a TikTok API integration costs.

The X API is pay-per-use with prepaid credits and no subscription. Creating a post costs $0.015, a post with a URL $0.200, and each post read $0.005, with pay-per-use capped at 3 million post reads per month. Details are in our X API pricing breakdown.

A unified provider takes the review work off your plate. With bundle.social, publishing runs under bundle.social's reviewed Meta app, and Meta's content rules still apply to every post. If you are weighing the engineering cost, see build vs buy for startups.

What 20 brands on 5 networks cost per month

The same deployment counts differently at each vendor. Twenty client brands with five networks each is 100 connected accounts, 20 profiles, 100 channels or 20 teams. At monthly list prices as of November 2026:

ProviderHow it countsMonthly price
bundle.social1 organization, 20 teams$100 on Pro ($90 billed yearly), up to 10,000 posts
Zernio100 connected accounts$318
Ayrshare20 profiles$599 on Business ($499 billed yearly), since Launch stops at 10 profiles
Upload-Post20 profiles$50 on Professional ($33 billed yearly), up to 25 profiles
Buffer100 channelsAbout $500 at the $5 Essentials rate, less with Buffer's lower rate above 10 channels
Native APIs5 integrationsEngineering and review time, plus X's per-request fees

On bundle.social, a post created once and sent to several accounts of one team counts once against the monthly quota. Twenty brands posting once a day to all five networks use about 600 of the 10,000 posts. If X is one of the five networks, bundle.social and Zernio both add X's per-post fees on top.

Upload-Post is the cheapest at this size. The trade-offs are DMs on Instagram only and a profile cap per plan. Buffer's figure is a ceiling for a use case its personal-key API is not built for. To run your own numbers, use the social media API cost calculator.

How to choose the best social media API for your product

Write down the operations your next release needs for each network: account connection, images, video, carousels, scheduling, status webhooks, analytics, comments and DMs. "Instagram support" on a pricing page does not tell you whether a specific Reel option or a private reply works.

Then run the same proof of concept on two candidates with the same test accounts:

  1. Connect an account through the provider's hosted flow.
  2. Schedule a post with media and wait for the published event.
  3. Send an intentionally invalid request and read the error.
  4. Revoke access, then reconnect and check the recovery path.
  5. Verify webhook signatures and handle a duplicate delivery. bundle.social signs each delivery with an x-signature header, a hex-encoded HMAC-SHA256 of the raw body.
  6. For messaging, reply inside the platform's window and confirm what happens outside it.

Readable errors and stable IDs matter as much as the feature list, because your support team works with them every day. For deeper comparisons, see the alternatives catalog, the Zernio, Ayrshare and Upload-Post comparisons, and our social media API guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best social media API?

There is no single winner. For multi-client products, a unified API is usually best: bundle.social when customers connect many accounts, Ayrshare when one brand equals one profile, Upload-Post for budget publishing, Zernio for the widest catalog. For deep features on one network, the native API is best, at the cost of review and maintenance.

Is there a free social media API?

Yes, with limits. bundle.social's Free plan includes API access, 20 posts a month and 3 teams. Zernio's first 2 connected accounts are free. Upload-Post's Free plan gives 10 uploads a month on 2 profiles, without TikTok. Buffer's Free plan includes 1 API key for 3 channels. Ayrshare has no free plan.

Which social media APIs support Instagram DMs?

bundle.social supports Instagram and Facebook Messenger DMs on request, with replies inside Meta's 24-hour window. Ayrshare's Messaging API covers Facebook, Instagram and X on Business plans or as an add-on. Upload-Post documents Instagram DMs, and Zernio lists inbox messaging. Building natively means Meta's messaging permissions and App Review.

Do I need Meta App Review if I use a unified API?

Not for your own app. With bundle.social, publishing runs on the official Meta APIs under bundle.social's reviewed app, so you skip submitting your own. Meta's rules still apply: accounts must be Instagram professional accounts or Facebook Pages, and content policies cover every post.

How much does the X API cost in 2026?

As of November 2026, X bills pay-per-use with prepaid credits and no subscription. Creating a post costs $0.015, a post with a URL costs $0.200, a post read costs $0.005 and a user read $0.010. Pay-per-use is capped at 3 million post reads a month; higher volumes need an enterprise plan.
