How to use

  1. 01

    Choose caption, bio or comment

The caption field applies the 2,200 limit with the hashtag and mention caps. The bio field uses 150 and the comment field 2,200.
  2. 02

Write with your hashtags in place

Hashtags are counted wherever they sit, in the caption body or in a block at the end. Over 30 and the Hashtags figure turns red.
  3. 03

    Check mentions

Instagram allows 20 @ tags in a caption. Email addresses are not counted as mentions.
  4. 04

    Fix line breaks before copying

If your paragraphs collapse when pasted, run the text through the Instagram line breaker first, then copy it from there.

Limitations

  • Instagram does not say whether it counts graphemes or code points, so the counter uses code points. A caption made mostly of emoji sequences may be judged slightly differently by the app.
  • The 150-character bio figure could not be read on the Instagram Help Center on the check date and is marked not verified; it is the limit the app's profile editor enforces.
  • The comment cap is not documented separately by Instagram. The page shows 2,200, which is the value bundle.social applies to comments and first comments.
  • The feed truncates captions after about two lines behind a "more" link; the tool does not predict where that cut falls.

FAQ

What is the Instagram caption character limit?

An Instagram caption can be 2,200 characters, with at most 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags. Source: Instagram Platform, IG User Media caption parameter, read 1 November 2026. Instagram does not name the unit, so this page counts code points; bundle.social validates the same 2,200 in UTF-16 units. The 150-character bio limit is shown as not verified.

Do hashtags count toward the 2,200 characters?

Yes. The hashtag block is part of the caption text, so every # and tag letter counts. Instagram also caps a caption at 30 hashtags, and the tool shows both figures.

Are hashtags in the first comment counted?

Not against the caption. Switch the field to "Comment or first comment" to count that text on its own; it has its own 2,200 cap in bundle.social.

Why is the bio limit marked not verified?

The Instagram Help Center page could not be loaded on the check date, so the 150 figure was not re-read on an official page. The app's profile editor enforces it, so the counter keeps it with a not verified label.

Does Instagram count an emoji as one character?

Instagram does not document its unit. The counter uses code points, so a plain emoji is 1 and a family emoji with joiners is 7. Open "More figures" to see the grapheme count too.

What happens if I publish an over-long caption through bundle.social?

The request is rejected before it reaches Instagram with a validation error on the text field, because bundle.social validates captions against 2,200 characters.
