How to use

  1. 01

    Choose a picture

Wide images suit one row of three. Tall or square ones work for two or three rows. The tool accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and AVIF.
  2. 02

    Pick the layout

Select 3, 6 or 9 tiles, and choose square (1:1) or portrait (4:5) tiles. The crop window on the source marks the area that becomes tiles.
  3. 03

    Frame it

Drag the crop window or move it with the arrow keys. Check the numbered preview, and switch on the profile grid view for an approximation of the cropped thumbnails.
  4. 04

    Export the ZIP

Choose JPEG or PNG, set the quality and, if you want, a tile width, then download. The files are named tile-01, tile-02 and so on in publishing order, so tile-01 goes up first.

Why the publishing order is reversed

The Instagram profile shows the newest post top-left. For the picture to come together, you publish the bottom-right tile first and the top-left tile last. The preview and the file names follow that order, so you upload tile-01, then tile-02, and continue from there.

Square or 4:5 tiles

Exported tiles are 1:1 or 4:5, and the Instagram API accepts both ratios for feed images. The profile grid shows a cropped thumbnail of each post, so the top and bottom edges of a tile may be hidden there. Opening the post shows the full tile.

Limitations

  • The profile grid view is an approximation. Instagram's profile shows roughly the middle 3:4 of each post, and the platform can change how thumbnails are cropped at any time.
  • Tiles are cut from the source pixels and never enlarged, so a small source split into nine gives small tiles. The tile size is shown before you export.
  • The tool does not post anything. Publishing order and timing are up to you or your scheduler.
  • Source images can be up to 50 MB and 40 megapixels. Each tile stays within 16.7 megapixels, the largest canvas iOS Safari accepts. Tiles export only as JPEG or PNG, the formats Instagram accepts.
  • JPEG tiles cannot hold transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick (white by default).
  • Thin seams can show between tiles after Instagram recompresses them. Keep the quality at 90 or above and avoid sharp lines that cross tile borders.

FAQ

Is the image uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser crops and slices the image and builds the ZIP. The page sends no request with your file.

In which order do I post the tiles?

Start with tile-01, which is the bottom-right piece, and work up to the highest number, which is the top-left piece. The preview shows the same numbers on the tiles.

Why does the preview not match my profile exactly?

Instagram crops profile thumbnails and has changed that crop over time. The profile grid view approximates it with a 3:4 centre crop. The exported tiles are complete and uncropped.

Why is there no 3:4 tile option?

The Instagram API accepts feed images from 4:5 to 1.91:1, and 3:4 is taller than 4:5, so a 3:4 tile could not be published as it is. The tool exports 4:5 tiles instead: when the profile grid shows roughly the middle 3:4 of a 4:5 post, only about 3% is hidden at each side, compared with about 12.5% for square tiles.

What happens when the width is not divisible by three?

The first columns each get one of the leftover pixels, so no pixel is lost and the seams line up. With Source pixels, tiles are cut 1:1 from your image. With a tile width set, the whole grid area is scaled once before cutting, and no tile is resized on its own.

Can I use the tiles for a carousel instead?

Yes. Choose one row of three tiles and add them to the carousel in reverse order of the file names, because carousel slides read left to right.
