JPG to PNG converter

Turn JPG photos into PNG files on your device. The tool applies the camera's rotation to the pixels and leaves the EXIF data, including the GPS location, out of the new file.

How to use

  1. 01

    Add JPG images

Drop up to 30 files with a .jpg or .jpeg extension, or pick them. PNG is already selected, so conversion starts right away.
  2. 02

    Check each row

The row shows the size before and after and the dimensions. The PNG will almost always be larger than the JPG.
  3. 03

    Download

Save the files one by one or all of them as a ZIP. Each file keeps its original name with -converted.png at the end.

When a PNG copy of a JPG helps

Every time a JPEG is edited and saved again it loses a little more detail. PNG is lossless, so a PNG copy can go through many rounds of edits without new artefacts, and some upload forms and design tools ask for PNG specifically. For posting a photo on social media there is no gain: the file gets bigger and the platform re-encodes it anyway.

JPG and JPEG are the same format

The two extensions name one format. The three-letter .jpg comes from early Windows systems, which allowed only three characters after the dot. The tool accepts both, and the output is the same.

Limitations

  • A PNG made from a JPG keeps the compression artefacts already in the photo. It stops further loss from here on but does not improve the image.
  • JPEG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque. Removing a background needs an image editor.
  • Colour profiles are not copied, so photos shot in a wide colour space can look slightly less saturated.
  • Limits: 30 images per batch, 50 MB and 40 megapixels per image. Larger results are scaled down to 8192 px on the longest edge and 16.7 megapixels.

FAQ

Will converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?

No. The PNG stores the photo exactly as the JPG shows it, artefacts included. It only prevents further loss when you edit and save the file again.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

JPEG throws away detail to stay small and PNG keeps every pixel. A photo saved as PNG is often several times the size of the JPG.

Is the GPS location removed?

Yes. The browser redraws the pixels on a canvas, and EXIF data such as the GPS location, camera model and date is not written to the PNG.

Can I make the background transparent?

Not with this tool. The JPG has no transparency to keep, and removing a background requires selecting it in an image editor.
