How to use

    Start with the title

    Pin title is the default field with the 100-character cap. Feed cards show only the start of a title, so put the keyword early.
  2. 02

    Count the description

    Switch to Pin description for the 800 limit. Hashtags are counted as text; Pinterest treats them as searchable keywords.
  3. 03

    Write alt text

    The Alt text field applies the 500 cap. Describe the image for screen readers rather than repeating the title.

    Copy each field

    Copy the field text when the figure is within the limit. bundle.social validates the same three numbers.

What does a Pin accept besides the title?

Pinterest's API v5 spec defines four length-limited fields when a Pin is created: title (100), description (800), alt_text (500) and link (2,048). The description is the public text shown with the Pin, while alt text describes the image for screen readers and is a separate field, so the same sentence does not have to do both jobs. Board names and board descriptions carry no maxLength in the spec, and the Pin schema also has an ai_disclosures field for declaring AI use, which is not text you count.

Limitations

  • The limits come from the maxLength values in Pinterest's published OpenAPI spec for the Pin object. The spec does not state the unit, so the counter uses code points.
  • Pinterest truncates titles and descriptions in the feed well before the hard cap; the visible portion depends on surface and is not predicted here.
  • Board names and board descriptions are not covered; the spec sets no maxLength on a board description.
  • Link URLs have a separate 2,048-character cap in the spec and are not counted as part of the description.

What is the Pinterest character limit for titles and descriptions?

They are accepted and counted as part of the 800 characters. Pinterest search relies mostly on the words themselves, so write the description as a sentence rather than a tag list.

Is alt text the same as the description?

No. Alt text is a separate 500-character field read by screen readers and used when the image cannot load. The description is the public text under the Pin.
