How to use

  1. 01

    Add PNG images

Drop up to 30 files or pick them. WebP at quality 80 is already selected, so conversion starts as soon as you add a file.
  2. 02

    Adjust the quality

Lower values give smaller files and more visible artefacts. After a change the files go back in the queue until you press Convert.
  3. 03

    Compare and download

Each row shows the size before and after. Save the files one by one or download them all as a ZIP.

When WebP is worth it

WebP files are usually much smaller than PNG for photos and for most graphics, which matters on your own website or blog, where every image adds to the page weight. Social platforms re-encode uploads anyway, so for a post the dimensions of the image matter more than the format you upload.

Which quality to start with

80 is a reasonable start for photos. For screenshots, interface images and graphics with small text, try 90 and look at the result at full size. A tiny icon or an image with only a few colours can come out larger as WebP; in that case keep the PNG.

Limitations

  • Safari and some older browsers cannot save WebP. There the WebP option is hidden and the tool picks another format, so use Chrome, Edge or Firefox to get WebP files.
  • Below quality 100 the WebP is lossy, so fine lines and small text can pick up faint artefacts. Keep the PNG for logos and line art that must stay pixel exact.
  • An animated PNG becomes a still WebP of its first frame. EXIF data and colour profiles are not copied.
  • Limits: 30 images per batch, 50 MB and 40 megapixels per image. Larger results are scaled down to 8192 px on the longest edge and 16.7 megapixels.

FAQ

Is transparency kept?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, so the transparent areas of the PNG stay transparent.

How much smaller will the WebP be?

It depends on the image. Photos usually shrink the most and simple graphics the least. Each row shows the exact size before and after, so you can check before you download.

Why did I get a PNG or JPEG instead of a WebP?

Your browser cannot encode WebP, so it saved another format. The row shows the type of the file you will download. Open the page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox to get WebP.

Are the images sent anywhere?

No. The browser converts each file with the Canvas API on your device. Nothing goes to a server, and closing the tab clears the files from memory.
